Scapie's Essay/Intro to the song:
Hello. Once upn a time I wrote this song. It's called "Mess On Your Hands," and I was focused on a particular layer of the song, and that layer of the song when I was making the song and writing the song was the ukulele part. Now, you're probably wondering how did I play the ukulele--I didn't! I don't play the ukulele! I had a session musician named my Dad play the ukulele part. We started with the ukulele part, he was playing, and I would say "Ok, do this. Ok, do this. Ok, ok, do this now," and he did, and we recorded the whole song just the ukulele part all the way through first.
Then came making all the other layers of the song, and we said "Ok, now we know what the ukulele songs like--what's next? How about the bass part?" and we did a bass part to fit with the ukulele part, and then we werre like "How about the drums?" and we did a drum part to fit with the ukulele part, and then we were like "OK, what about the voice part and the subject of the song? What are we going to do about that?" and I was like "I will tell you: I will sing a melody that fits, ok, with the ukulele part, right? Like I will listen to it, and I will go hum-mah-mah-huzzi-bah-huh-buh-ba-di-bah-ba-be-do-de-doh doh doh..." (that's not the melody, because I don't want to spoil it, but that's how you do it) and then after I wrote the melody then I was like "So what am I going to be singing about?" and then, again, fitting in with the layers, I said "What did the ukulele part FEEL like it was about, ok?" and then I wrote about that, and the answer is it's about kind of like being like a little freaked out like about being like uncomfortable and not fitting in a little bit, so that's what it's about.
lyrics
They look so happy, don't you think
You could be them if you tried
So go on on, blend into the crowd
Just drink your fruity Kool-Aid drink
Keep your differences inside
And laugh along, but not too loud
Hey, you're sitting pretty
It's almost like they are your friends
But as you're cracking witty
You know that you're just pretending
So, if you feel like you are popular
No one likes you
And if you feel you're fitting in
Just know that no one understands
And if you feel like you are one of them
They're not like you
And if you feel you're gonna win
You've got a mess on your hands
Turn off your mind and just go numb
And stretch your mouth into a smile
Tell yourself that's how happy feels
Give yourself over to the dumb
If you can keep it up a while
You might convince yourself it's real
Hey, this time you got it
Your lonely days are long behind
Before you take your shot it
Looks like someone should remind you
That if you feel like you are popular
No one likes you
And if you feel you're fitting in
Just know that no one understands
And if you feel like you are one of them
They're not like you
And if you feel you're gonna win
You've got a mess on your hands
But dry your eyes
You don't believe in feelings, anyway
Maybe you should just surrender?
So, if you feel like you are popular
No one likes you
And if you feel you're fitting in
Just know that no one understands
And if you feel like you are one of them
They're not like you
And if you feel you're gonna win
You've got a mess on your hands
So, if you feel like you are popular
No one likes you
And if you feel you're fitting in
Just know that no one understands
And if you feel like you are one of them
They're not like you
And if you feel you're gonna win
You've got a mess on your hands
